Over the past few years, Port of Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe, invested in the development of a sophisticated quay wall asset management (KMS) to provide reliable performance indicator of their quays structures and optimize the preservation stategies of their inventory. The KMS system, developed in collaboration with SIMCO Technologies and Traduco Asset Management, provides a proactive asset management approach to support the growth and expansion of the port. 

Since the deployment of the system, the port has strategically expanded their infrastructure to increase operational capacity with major projects such as the Amaliahaven quay wall extension and the widening project of Yangtzekanaal Sleperskade in Maasvlakte 2. SIMCO has worked closely with the administration to integrate these new assets into the KMS system, ensuring seamless tracking of durability performance and long-term degradation forecasts. 

Valuable life-cycle insights for the new structures

SIMCO provided key durability and service-life engineering inputs for these new quay wall structures. This included the generation of performance-based parameters required for predictive modeling within the KMS platform. The dataset acquired before the structure entered service, combined with the corresponding service-life assessment, functioned as the “Birth Certificate”. These as-built condition records provide a reliable basis for future life-cycle cost evaluation and for establishing informed maintenance and rehabilitation stategies.
