SIMCO, formerly COSIGMA, was commissioned by the owner to conduct an in-depth assessment of the structural condition of the south transept wall of the Gesù Church and its interactions with the wooden roof frame following significant damage to the structure. In 2019, the construction of a multi-story tower by a developer on the adjacent lot caused severe structural damage to the Gesù Church, which has been classified as a heritage building since 2012. The work disturbed the soil beneath the masonry wall of the church’s south transept, leading to foundation destabilization, significant wall tilting, and numerous structural issues that required complex restoration work.
SIMCO’s unique expertise in materials and structures ensured the durability and stability of the building through:
The firm integrated modern engineering solutions to ensure the building’s durability while preserving the architectural heritage of the Gesù. The work required constant monitoring of wall deformations and movements. A precise sequencing of steps—securing the building, erecting scaffolding, underpinning, masonry restoration, and interior interventions—was developed in collaboration with stakeholders.
